How long should a title tag be?
Google shows about 50 to 60 characters before it cuts a title off. Put the words people search for first and keep the brand at the end.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Not directly, but it is the text under your link in results. A clear 120 to 160 character description gets more clicks, and clicks are what you are ranking for.
What does the canonical tag do?
It tells search engines which URL is the main copy of a page, so duplicates (tracking parameters, http and https, trailing slashes) do not split its ranking.
