Dear [Manager's name], I'm writing to let you know that I'm not feeling well, and I will not be able to work today. I'd like to take this as sick leave. I've left notes on where my current work stands, and I'll pick up anything outstanding as soon as I'm back. I'll be resting and away from email, and will reply to anything waiting when I return. Thank you for understanding. Kind regards, [Your name]

Questions people ask
How do I write an email to call in sick?
Keep it short: say you are unwell and won't be working, say when you expect to be back, who covers urgent work, and whether you can be reached. You don't need to give medical details.
What should the subject line of a sick leave email be?
Clear and scannable, with your name and the date, for example "Sick leave: Jane Doe, today" or "Out sick Monday: Jane Doe". The generator gives three to choose from.
Do I have to say why I am sick?
No. "I'm not feeling well" is enough in most workplaces. Mention it if you might be contagious, since that is why you are staying away.
Can I text my boss that I am sick instead of emailing?
If that is how your team usually talks, yes. Pick the text message format for a short message for SMS, Slack, Teams or WhatsApp. Follow your company's sick leave policy if it asks for email.
When should I send a sick day email?
As early as you can, ideally before your working day starts, so your team can plan around it.
